What not to do when gambling in Vegas

What not to do when gambling in Vegas

Whether you have been to Las Vegas on dozens of occasions or simply planning to make your very first trip to that sparkling gem of the desert, it is important to bear in mind that this is a city which respects proper decorum. No, don’t laugh. Though L.V. has learned a solid reputation as being a place where grown-ups go to misbehave, that should never be taken as a blank check allowing you to run amok and act in a way which would not be accepted in your own hometown. Especially when gambling in any of Vegas' many glittering casinos, it is of the utmost importance to respect the proper code of conduct. This way, not only will you enjoy yourself to the maximum but you will not face what could be some highly unpleasant consequences of unacceptable behavior.

Let's take a look at some of the basic rules which any smart gambler must bear in mind whenever gambling in Las Vegas. At the very top of my list, I would mention the importance of being polite with your fellow players. If you’re seated at a blackjack or poker table, it is in no circumstances acceptable to talk a lot of obnoxious trash, or taunt your opponents in anyway. This is obviously true when playing with people you do not know personally, but also should be acted on when playing with your friends. For instance, if three of you are playing at a table along with two other individuals who you never met before, it is not acceptable to banter loudly amongst yourselves. You will only distract the other players at the table.

Being polite does not to stop with other gamblers. You must also show courtesy and respect when dealing with dealers, cocktail waitresses, cashiers and any other staff member in a casino you might be visiting. It probably does not need to be said that pit bosses demand respect, but you must realize and that the same respect must be paid towards any casino employees. They’re working hard to ensure that you have a good time, and in return you must be as courteous as if you were attending a fine restaurant or hotel in another city.

Another pitfall is that it's far too easy to lose a lot of money in a very short amount of time. Therefore, I generally have a rule of thumb when I am gambling that prevents me from decimating my savings account within a 20-minute time span. My rule goes as follows: whatever game I am playing, if I lose three hands in a row, I simply get up and walk away to another table (or, even better, cool my head with a tasty beverage from the nearest for cocktail lounge). Never take things personally, thinking a dealer is cheating you out of your money and therefore you must hang in there until you make it back. That may be the biggest amateur move of all time when it comes in playing in a casino. And you don’t want to look like an amateur, do you?
